Spazi d’art Matias Spescha

The former Truns textile factory
The «Tuchfabrik Truns AG» was founded by Fidel Tuor in 1912 and played an important role in Trun and the region for almost a century. Until the 1970s, the factory employed more than 400 people. Its remoteness, managerial mistakes and, above all, the growing competition from Asia led from downsizing to final closure of the «Fabrica da ponn Trun» in 2001.
The steady decline in the population of Trun is partly due to this circumstance. For decades, Trun was one of the most important industrial sites in Graubünden and the largest in the Surselva. Source: «Trun – vargau e present»
Trun Cultura aims at a revival through the arts, with the village’s «local genius» as the starting point.
Ideal Space for Matias Spescha’s Artworks
The former production hall of Tuchfabrik Truns AG – an industrial building from the 1960s – has been transformed into the SPAZI D’ART MATIAS SPESCHA exhibition hall.
The starting point for the conversion of the concrete skeleton hall encompassing 1000 square meters was the requirement that Matias Spescha’s work could be exhibited and presented in the best possible way. Curators Venice Spescha and Markus Hilfiker worked closely with the architects and museum designers gasser, derungs to create a spatial concept adequately welcoming the artist’s monumental works, particularly from his latest period.
The light-flooded, open SPAZI SPESCHA now ideally displays Spescha’s art, offering visitors a unique visual experience.

A Space for Dialogue
In the former production hall, Matias Spescha’s work is shown from varying perspectives in seasonal exhibitions. The vast hall allows for expansive installations, for large paintings well as smaller formats, such as drawings and prints.
Exhibitions are conceived as individual, seasonal projects. The SPAZI SPESCHA does not follow the concept of estate deposits with permanent displays. The intention is to shed light on the vast collection’s many facets over time and offer the visitors new insights into the artist’s oeuvre. Spescha’s legacy is ideally suited for display in varying artistic and historical contexts, open to encounters with contemporary positions.
